The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster final round of play.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.

Playoff Decider

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
