Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
Summers declared he would step back from public duties after legislative body released his repeated messages with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

The economist commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their progress".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The newly public messages revealed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected the economist's decision to resign.

"We value his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," the organization remarked.

Legislative Background

This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to approve a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Epstein.

The bill will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for approval. He has stated he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the matter following pressure from his base.

Email Contents

A group of financier-linked emails made public by the legislative panel days ago referenced several high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.

The communications revealed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to link Summers to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were released with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to rebuild faith and repair connections with the persons most important to me".

Professional History

The economist occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.

Summers joined the board of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its top executive the company leader.
