Explosion Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others were hurt in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were arrested at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the incident was located not long after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.
The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the property was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander stated to the media.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister said.
Impact Assessment
Those injured by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor was convinced the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
